Empowering Frontline Care Staff Through Comprehensive Induction and Ongoing Training

As part of our induction process, we adhere to the 15 standards in the Care Certificate, as well as Outcome 14 of the CQC’s Essential Standards. Induction consists of a three-day classroom-based period (led by Training Manager Kevin Smith) that combines e-learning in advance of attending an induction accredited by Skills For Care, as well as additional theory and practical sessions. After this, a senior care worker shadows you.

  • Awareness (Level 2) of dementia and challenging behaviours related to it
  • Protecting vulnerable adults and children
  • Administration of medications (Level 2)
  • Positioning and moving (theory and practice).

  • Assessment package for fire and rescue training.
  • Care for bereaved or dying people (Level 2)
  • Emergency first aid
  • Food hygiene and nutrition
  • Working with Adults with Learning Disabilities and Adults with Autism

The training is refreshed based on centrally maintained training matrices. For example, safeguarding training is updated annually. Care coordinators and HR ensure that training is up to date before assigning care workers to visits, and training plans are tied to cohort needs to ensure maximum capacity.

Shadow Training

At ICare, we prioritize the seamless transition of our Carers and Community Assistants, ensuring they provide exceptional care. Our comprehensive shadow training allows them to observe and learn from experienced colleagues, gaining insights into best practices and our high standard of care. Guided by mentors, trainees witness real-life situations, develop communication skills, and understand individual needs. Tailored to each role, our training equips Carers and Community Assistants with essential skills, including privacy, safe handling, and care plan implementation. With a strong foundation, our caregivers deliver excellent care, reflecting our commitment to compassion and continuous development for a meaningful impact on the lives we support.

Community Assistant training

We pride ourselves on our staff training. Training for our meals employees is based on our culture as a care company.

Our meals staff induction programme includes:

  • Food Hygiene
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults
  • Dementia awareness and challenging behaviour
  • Load handling
  • Fire safety
  • Health & safety
  • First aid / medication prompts

Every Community Assistant who conducts Safe and Well Checks is fully trained. Safe and Well Check training is delivered in-house. The current program focuses on independence, safety, prevention, and intervention.

In the training programme, Community Assistants will learn how to identify any of the following signs of concern in Service Users.

  • Signs of general deterioration
  • Signs of malnutrition
  • Changes to previous habits or methods of greetings
  • Displays signs of confusion
  • Signs of changes to their normal home environment

The program promotes understanding of the issues and concerns of older people, as well as ensuring sensitivity of approach to ensure the dignity and independence of the service user is never compromised.

Ensuring Effectiveness

A large portion of the trainee’s effectiveness is initially assured through formal sign-off from the trainee (verified by Q&A sessions) and during the mandatory shadowing period, and subsequently through:

  • Each month, a spot check will be conducted unannounced
  • Feedback from SUs and carers
  • Supervisions held on a quarterly basis – reflective practice
  • An audit of the records of care that has been provided.
